Schema markup for GEO: what actually helps.

Structured data spent years as a rich snippets tactic: add the markup, get the stars in search results. Its value now is different and larger. Schema is how you state facts about your business in a form a machine cannot misread.

Why it matters more for answers than for rankings

When an assistant composes an answer it needs facts it can assert confidently. Prose is ambiguous. Schema is not. A page that says "we have been serving the region for over two decades" leaves a model guessing. A page carrying a foundingDate leaves nothing to interpret.

Every ambiguity you remove is one fewer reason for an engine to hedge or pick a competitor whose details are clearer.

The markup worth implementing

  • Organization. The foundation. Legal name, alternate names, logo, founding date, contact points, and critically the sameAs links to your profiles elsewhere. This is how you tell an engine that the company on your site and the company in a directory are the same entity.
  • LocalBusiness. For anyone with a service area or premises. Address, hours, service area, price range. Get this exactly consistent with every other listing you have.
  • Service or Product. One per genuine offering, with clear descriptions and pricing where you can publish it.
  • FAQPage. Underrated for GEO. It hands an engine question and answer pairs in the exact shape it wants. Use it only for questions people genuinely ask.
  • Article with author. On every piece of content. Attribution is an evidence signal, and anonymous content is weaker evidence.
  • Review and AggregateRating. Only where you have genuine reviews to describe, and only where the platform's terms permit it.

What does not help

Marking up things that are not there. Inventing an aggregate rating, adding FAQ markup to questions nobody asks, or describing services you do not offer. Engines cross reference structured data against the visible page and against other sources. Markup that contradicts reality damages trust in everything else you have marked up.

Volume for its own sake does not help either. Six accurate types implemented properly beat twenty half filled ones.

The sameAs property deserves its own paragraph

If you implement one thing from this article, make it this. The sameAs array in your Organization schema lists every other place your business exists: your Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, industry directories, review platforms, Wikipedia or Wikidata if you are there.

This is the connective tissue of entity recognition. Without it an engine sees several possibly related listings. With it, it sees one business with corroborating evidence in many places, which is precisely the confidence it needs to name you.

Schema does not make your business better. It makes your business unmistakable, which is what a model needs before it will recommend you.

Getting it done

Validate everything with Google's Rich Results Test and Schema.org's validator before you ship. Then check it again after any site change, because template updates silently break markup more often than anyone expects. It is an afternoon of work for a developer and it is the highest certainty item on any GEO plan.
